Compare the Best TV & Movie Streaming Services

Streaming services have totally proven themselves as the future of entertainment. As high speed internet service penetrates more and more areas, the reach of these streaming services is only going to increase. They are cheaper, more convenient, and a more customized version of what cable television has to offer. Earlier, cord cutters were in the minority, because the streaming services did not offer a complete entertainment package like cable services. But with time and improvement in technology, all of that has started to change. Today, streaming services offer a whole suite of programming from TV shows, movies, original programming, and more.

Movie and TV streaming services have become big and they will only get bigger from here on. They are offering everything you could expect from a cable connection and even more. Here are the services that are defining this space today and if you sign up for any of these, there is a good possibility that you won’t miss cable TV. We will keep you up to date with developments of the newest streaming services such VIDGO TV and DIRECTV Now.

Related imageAny discussion about streaming services is not complete without a Netflix mention. This streaming service has so much to offer to its subscribers. The best part is that it is only getting better by the day. It started as a DVD mail order service that expanded into online content streaming. Netflix has one of the most impressive content libraries among the streaming services. The movie selection is especially great. Netflix is every movie lover’s paradise. There is a decent TV show collection to keep you happy as well. The service has made a very conscious decision to reduce the number of TV shows it hosts in order to make way for its original programming.

Netflix has invested in many original series and it has been a successful venture to say the least. It has delivered to us absolute delights like Narcos, House of Cards, BoJack Horseman, Bloodline, Master of None, and the recent sensation, Stranger Things, among others. These shows are exclusively available on Netflix. Once you watch these shows, you will not think twice before subscribing to this streaming service.

So, you have popular movie titles, awesome shows, and you can access all of that from the device of your choice and at a time that is convenient to you. Oh, and the subscription fee is only a fraction of what you pay for a cable connection. The plans start from as low as $7.99 a month for which you get one SD stream. The next plan costs $9.99 per month, which comes with two simultaneous HD streams. The highest pack is available for a monthly fee of $11.99 and gets you four simultaneous HD streams.

Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus also offer you a similar kind of library. But, they do not even come close to Netflix as far as original programming is concerned. The one big benefit that Prime subscribers enjoy over the Netflix subscribers is the bevy of amazing freebies that include 2-day Amazon delivery, free Kindle books, access to Amazon Photos, and more. Also, Hulu Plus has a far better TV show collection than Netflix.

This is a streaming service offered by one of the most popular premium networks. Until recently, cord cutters had a hard time finding their favorite HBO shows online. There was HBO Go, but to access programming on this service you needed a cable login. HBO Now  on the other hand, does not come with any strings attached. Pegged at $14.99 a month, it comes at a steep price for a streaming service, but for a fan of the Game of Thrones, Veep, Girls, and more such HBO shows, this is not a very high price to pay.

The shows are made available on the service as soon as they air on the cable. You do not have to wait hours, days and in some cases, even months to watch the next episode of your favorite shows. This is huge for fans of HBO who were so far craving for their HBO fix, after having cut the cord. Well, now you no longer need a cable connection to enjoy HBO.

Other channels are also offering their very own streaming services and are also cheaper than HBO Now. Though subscribing to channel-specific streaming services can limit you in terms of variety, if you are a fan of shows on a particular channel, it is worth the money.

Sling TV

slingThe primary reason people still prefer cable over streaming services is that they do not have to search for the content they want to enjoy. All you need to do is tune in to your favorite channel at the right time and the next episode of your highly anticipated show starts airing. Sling TV tackled this issue head on.

Sling TV can be best described as “cable minus the cord”. This service basically envelopes the best of both worlds. It offers you cable programming without any contracts or equipment fee. You can watch all the shows as they air and you can do so on your television, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or even your console. This kind of freedom is unimaginable with a cable connection.

The monthly subscription of Sling TV is also way lower than what you are used to pay for a cable connection. You can start from a plan as low as $20 and get to watch as many as 28 channels and also have access to the on-demand content library of the service provider. This is the Sling Orange Plan. A step up from this is the Sling Blue Plan, which for $25 a month can get you 40+ channels and access to on-demand content. If you still want more entertainment, then there is the all-encompassing Sling Orange+Blue Plan that will get you over 60 channels and the on-demand content for $40.

PlayStation Vue also fall in this category, but is pricier than Sling TV. PlayStation Vue offers more programming options than Sling TV, and costs more as well.

3 Things In The Walking Dead’s “Self Help” That Just Didn’t Work

The Walking Dead’s ‘Self Help’ was one of the most anticipated episodes of the season, due to the fact that many fans—rightfully—believed it would be the episode when the build-up around the character of Eugene paid off. As it turns out, Eugene—like his comic book counterpart—was lying about having a cure for the virus and had led the group across state lines for absolutely nothing. The episode was a great one, but not everything about the episode really worked. The following are three things that the writers of Self Help could have improved upon!

Why do the characters keep flipping cars?

It’s understandable for the show’s writers to introduce complicates that make it impossible for the group to travel by vehicle all the time. Fuel can easily run out, cars can break down, and accidents can even happen. But it seems that the characters in the Walking Dead just can’t stop flipping cars! In this episode, Abraham flips the bus after taking his eyes off the road for just a moment—in fact, the flipping bus sequence seemed almost exactly like the ridiculous sequence in season 2 where Lori flipped her own car! The writers would have been better off having the bus run out of fuel than causing yet another flipped vehicle scenario.

Maggie’s lack of self-reflection

It was nice to have Maggie and Eugene in a scene together, but the writers should have used the character’s downtime (such as their banter on the bus) to allow Maggie a moment of self-reflection about the death of her father and her missing sister.

The kills were a little too easy

The scene where Eugene dispatches with a group of walkers using nothing but a high-pressure fire hose was a great little humorous touch to an otherwise bleak show—but the walkers in this episode seemed a little too easy to kill. So easy, in fact, that many viewers wondered why the group didn’t decide to just plow through the road where the walkers were fenced in! After the bus flipped, the walkers were killed with such skill and speed that it made their potential escape from the situation completely void of tension. It’s normal for the characters to become better at killing walkers, but there needs to still be some element of force behind the walkers for them to be truly threatening.

What did you think about this episode?

How Carol Went From “Blah” to “Best”

In the first two seasons of the show, few fans could have predicted that Carol—the unassuming wife of an abusive husband—would become one of the most badass characters on the show. Carol is currently one of the most popular characters on the show, in line with Daryl and second only to Rick. But how did Carol go from house wife to butt-kicking anti-hero?

She learned to shoot—and shoot well

In the beginning, Carol did not really know how to shoot or kill walkers. She was one of the members of the group who had to be protected by the more experienced marksmen such as Rick and Shane. However, the death of Sophia caused a shift in Carol’s personality and made her focus on surviving—and part of surviving in the world of the Walking Dead is knowing how to kill, and how to kill well. Carol learned to shoot, stab and even kill with her own bare hands. This greatly increased not only her asset to the group but her personal inner and out strength as well.

She became the most practical member of the group

The hope of finding Sophia, to viewers, was the opposite of practical. A young girl roaming in the woods is not a likely candidate for survival in the normal world—much less a world where zombies exist. Yet Carol continued to cling to the hope that Sophia would be found, despite the fact that it wasn’t realistic, and despite the fact that stopping and searching for her was using up resources.62d8e21c50171489002a936036d28e33

After it was discovered that Sophia had long since been a walker, Carol lost that sense of naïve hopefulness and became much more practical. She killed Karen and the others when the flu outbreak occurred, because she believed that killing them would stop the disease from reaching the rest of the group. She did not want to bring back the two young people in town to the prison because they did not have any essential skills to add to the group and would only be two more mouths to feed. And she knew that killing the Terminus man who threatened them was the only way to ensure that he would not get to attack them—or baby Judith. Carol’s practicality has led her to become stronger, and led her to make tough—and sometimes debatable—decisions.

5 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Baxter the Dog

The Anchorman films would be nothing without Baxter—the loveable, adventurous, and even multi-lingual pet companion of Will Ferrell’s character, Ron Burgandy. The character plays a pivotal role in both films, but how much do you really know about this famous movie dog character? Take a look at the following five things that you (probably!) didn’t know about this comedic movie dog.

Baxter is named after Ted Baxter from the Mary Tyler Moore Show

The writers behind the film decided to name Ron Burgandy’s dog Baxter after the fake newsanchor Ted Baxter from the popular Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Baxter had to be recast for the sequel

In the original Anchorman film, Baxter was played by a female dog named Peanut. Unfortunately, Peanut passed away in between 2004 and 2013 (her exact date of death is unknown) and the role of Baxter had to be recast. The dog who was newly cast in the role, Quince, is a male.

Quince did not have much experience in acting prior to Anchorman 2

Although most “movie dogs” have plenty of experiencing and training in the field, Quince was fairly new to the industry. He knew a few basic commands, such as “go” and “walk,” but had to be trained more extensively during filming in ordre to perform the myriad of tricks and actions required of him. The only major experience Quince had prior to Anchorman 2 was performing as the Grinch’s dog in a stage adaptation of the show.

Three dogs were cast as Baxter for Anchorman 2, but only one was needed for the final film

The producers behind the film cast three different dogs as Baxter in order to make sure they would have enough dogs on hand to perform the role. However, Quince picked up his new tricks very quickly and ended up being the only dog to perform in the film.

Quince had to do “press tours” for Anchorman 2

It’s not just the human actors who have to make appearances for the press! For his role as Baxter in Anchorman 2, Quince the dog was required to make several appearances and even give ‘interviews’ where he barked on cue in response to questions asked by reporters. Quince’s trainer noted that he often got tired towards the end of these interviews and would refuse to answer any more questions.

The Walking Dead: Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse

I think all of mankind has already imagined the day when zombies walk freely throughout the land. It is obvious in the number of movies and games grossing the charts in recent years. In addition, the amount of people posting information regarding what to do when it really happens has been increasing.

Everyone already had it in their minds, and it was just a matter of time before the television industry joined in on the fun.

One of the television shows that are widely acclaimed by a lot of viewers recently has been The Walking Dead. It is about a world where a lot of individuals have been infected by a certain virus, and though it is in every single one of them, there are those who are immune. These are the people who are running rampantly and trying to stay alive and keeping themselves away from hordes of zombies.

It should also be noted that this series originally was based from a comic book.

The main protagonist of the television show is Rick Grimes, who is played by Andrew Lincoln, is a former sheriff in King’s County who has been comatose for several months. Once he woke up, everything that he knew about the world changed. It was hell by the time he stepped out of the hospital.

In addition, once he met up with the group he became the instant leader. It was the best choice considering his best traits – calm, smart, a good shooter, a good friend, husband, and father, but no character is always perfect. In this case, he sees every situation in a neutral position. He never distinguishes which is good and evil. As long as you are doing your job, all is well.

This may have caused some aspects in his family ties to crack and sometimes, ultimately break down as a result. Furthermore, as a man given power, there are times when he struggles to keep it under control. He came to a point when he was high with power, as a result became a dictator. It was a good thin that he snapped out of it, especially when they were facing a new antagonist.

In the latest season, a Philip Blake who goes by the moniker “The Governor”, portrayed by David Morrissey, is the latest main antagonist. He heads the place called Woodbury, which he claims to protect, but still the town’s people blindly follow him. However, they never know the obsessions they have regarding the zombies that the television show calls walkers.

He has jars of decapitated walker heads displayed in one of his rooms and he keeps his daughter, who is also a walker, a secret from them all. On the other hand, one follower started to be suspicious of him and found all his secrets. Eventually, she killed his daughter. Rick’s group attacks Woodbury one day to save two of their companions and was blamed by The Governor for what happened.

It immediately became a scuffle. The show features the exciting world that most would fear; but for zombie fanatics, it is the best show that lives their fantasy. Which leaves us with one question – will this eventually happen?

In that case, it may be a good idea to watch them do it first to give you an idea what to do if ever it really does.

AT&T U-verse is a Bonding Tool

Television has a way of bringing people together. Almost everyone loves to kick back, relax, and enjoy some TV.  The television can give us an escape from our own secular world and helps us discover new ideas, introduce us to new people, and bring us to a fairy tale land.

Families around have family movie night, friends have get-togethers to watch their favorite shows, sports fans gather together to watch the big game, and if you’re like my family, TV can give you something to bond over.

My older sister and I loved General Hospital, even though we technically weren’t allowed to watch it, when we were growing up. Many nights we would sneak out of our beds whenever we could to watch from the hallway while my mother and father watched their VCR recordings of GH. Then we would go back to our beds and play games like “Guess Who” and “Meet General Hospital.”

“Guess Who” meant we described a character from the show and their story line and the other had to guess who we were talking about, and “Meet General Hospital” meant we would imagine that we were chosen to meet the crew of GH and got to chose a star (or two) from the show to spend an entire day with.

We even incorporated General Hospital into our Barbie playing. If you watch General Hospital you know that they used to (sometimes still do) have an annual Nurse’s Ball where the cast puts on performances on the show and everyone dresses in ball gowns for AIDs awareness.

My sister and I would dress our Barbie’s up and reenact the Nurse’s Ball every year. We absolutely loved it and really anticipated the event. Every new “season” GH had we would get psyched up about the new beginning with all the characters’ new cameos.

Let’s just say TV has always been bringing my sister and I together, and continues to do so today. Now my sister and I live 5 hours away from each other but we still have our shows that keep up together.

I am constantly posting memes on my sister’s Facebook timeline that are referenced toward Vampire Diaries, we talk on the phone for hours about ABC’s Revenge, and we text back and forth during performances on Dancing With the Stars. We love to talk TV.

As my sister and I started getting older and living more “grown up” lives it started to become harder for us to keep up on our TV shows together. So, she and I both ordered the AT&T U-verse Home DVR this year before the new Fall Lineup started up. Find out more about the AT&T U-verse at

So far we have been able to stay on the same track with our shows give or take a few days. It has been great for us and our shared loved of TV. Five hours apart, we have to do all that it takes to stay as bonded as possible and AT&T U-verse has really helped us in doing so!

From the “Boob Tube” to Science Fiction

old_tv_set_Television is an interesting invention.  From the early days, even as far back as the late 19th Century, the transmission of electrical signals across time and space has fascinated technological pioneers.  TV technology grew from the advent of the telephone, which in turn came from telegraphs, each transmitting their signals through an electronic device across vast distances.

The earliest TVs used what is sometimes referred to as “the boob tube”, due to two factors: the negative effect of watching too much TV and thus making someone a “boob” and the “tube”, which is what the main physical component of early TVs were called.  A variety of tubes, including amplifier tubes and then on to cathode ray tubes but these were unsuccessful in transmitting moving pictures at first.

During the 1920’s, various inventors from all around the world were experimenting with different attempts at transmitting video signals using these tubes, including Russians, Japanese, Scottish and Hungarian.

By the 1950’s televisions were in households all over the world. The cathode ray tubes became more advanced by this point and while extremely rare, color television was available by 1953.  Due to the high costs of the sets and dearth of broadcasting programs around, most people stuck with their black and white sets.

These tube sets lasted for many years and the first wave of new TV technology did not come until rear projection sets emerged.  Though available as early as the 1970’s, rear projection, using a much larger TV format screen, did not come into regular use until the 80’s.  The technology used with these is similar to a video projector and thus the name, projecting images onto a screen, only here it happens on the TV, using a beam of light and in some cases utilizing the aforementioned cathode tubes.

Though still in service in some places today, these rear projection TVs have been replaced by several newer sets, including flat panel display.  Flat panel display is broken up into three separate categories: Plasma, LCD and LED.

Plasma sets use a charged ion gas to display the image, which is praised for its deep blacks for better contrast.  Early plasmas often had a “burn in”, causing images to stay on the screen, even after the set was turned off.

LCD, or liquid-crystal display, utilize light modulating technology.  Liquid crystals don’t emit light directly and are not susceptible to screen burn in.  They are praised for their light, compact size but sometimes suffer from a limited viewing angle and motion blur.

The current champion of TV technology is the LED, or light-emitting diode.  While Plasma and LCD are praised for their slim, compact size, LED are even slimmer and use organic semiconductors to emit light.  The incredibly high level of definition possible with LED is staggering.

But this is only the beginning.  TV technology has and will continue to grow.
